Historical Interpretation

The Historical Interpretation study programme focuses on the so-called authentic, or historically informed interpretation of music from earlier stylistic periods, with an emphasis on understanding contemporary performance principles, stylistic specifics and historical contexts of musical works.

The study combines intensive practical performance instruction with theoretical reflection on musical styles, historical contexts and performance principles of individual periods. Students actively participate in concert projects, collaborate with leading artists and gain experience on the national and international stage.

During their studies, students are introduced to various interpretative approaches based on the stylistic specifics of individual compositions and their study in the context of historical sources, especially contemporary treatises and many other historical documents. Instruction is designed to foster the development of individual artistic expression while leading to a deep understanding of the historical context of a musical work.

The study programme is implemented at the Organ and Early Music Department, which has long been developing the tradition of early music performance in the Czech musical environment and cooperates with a number of prominent Czech and foreign artists-teachers. They not only act as permanent lecturers at the department, but many of them are also invited to collaborate on artistic projects or to lead specialised courses and masterclasses.

Historical interpretation includes the following specialisations:

  • historical singing
  • traverso (historical transverse flutes)
  • historical oboe
  • historical violin
  • historical cello
  • harpsichord and historical keyboard instruments
  • lute and related historical lute instruments

A graduate of the Historical Performance programme is able to independently interpret musical works at a high artistic level and is familiar with various compositional styles and historical periods. He/she is prepared to actively participate in concert life as a soloist, instrumentalist or singer, chamber player and member of orchestral ensembles.

He has a deep knowledge of the repertoire combined with historically informed interpretation and is familiar with solo, chamber and orchestral literature. He/she is familiar with the principles of stylistic interpretation of different historical periods and can apply them in practical performance activities.

The graduate is able to independently analyse the interpreted work and is able to formulate his/her own interpretative concept with regard to stylistic, historical and aesthetic contexts. At the same time, he/she can work with historical sources and reflect on their significance for contemporary performance practice.

He also has a good overview of the history of music, the development of musical styles and the historical development of instrumental playing or singing and performance traditions. This enables him/her to perceive a musical work in a wider historical and cultural context.

Thanks to the experience gained during the studies, the graduate is prepared to work in chamber ensembles, ensembles, choirs and orchestras and is able to respond flexibly to various situations in the contemporary musical environment.

The graduate also possesses basic pedagogical competences – he/she knows the principles of pedagogical work, the methodology of teaching in his/her field and aspects of music psychology. This knowledge can be applied especially in pedagogical activities at primary art schools or other educational institutions.

Graduates of the Historical Performance specialization find employment in a wide range of artistic and pedagogical activities in the field of historically informed interpretation of music of earlier stylistic periods. He or she can work as a soloist, instrumentalist or singer, but also as a member of specialized ensembles and orchestras focused on the interpretation of early music. As part of his concert practice, he can participate in chamber projects, orchestral productions, opera projects and festival performances in the Czech Republic and abroad.

Thanks to the experience gained during his studies, he is ready to collaborate in various musical projects – for example as a continuum player, accompanist for instrumentalists and singers in concert and stage productions. A historically informed approach also enables graduates to apply period instruments and performance principles not only in the performance of older music, but also in the performance of contemporary works intended for historical instruments. Historical instruments are now increasingly becoming the inspiration for new compositions and collaborations with contemporary composers who are creating new repertoire for them.

In addition to concert activities, the graduate can also devote himself to pedagogical work. He or she can find employment especially in elementary art schools, conservatories or other educational institutions focused on music education, for example in master classes and other educational activities.
