Admission procedure

Course of the admission procedure

  1. A written exam in harmony (harmonization of folk song, modulation) and counterpoint (exposition of fugue) within the scope of the conservatory’s curriculum, constitutes 5% of the overall assessment.
  2. Practical examination in aural analysis (intonation and rhythmic dictation) within the scope of the conservatory curriculum. The result of the examination in harmony, counterpoint and aural analysis constitutes 5% of the overall assessment.
  3. An oral examination in general music, harmony, counterpoint, musical forms, musical instruments, and music history – all within the scope of the conservatory’s curriculum. This part of the examination constitutes 10% of the overall assessment.
  4. Interview oriented towards contemporary music in the field of performance and theoretical knowledge, as well as general knowledge of other arts. This part of the examination constitutes 5% of the overall assessment.
  5. The practical rehearsal includes the performance of repertoire from different stylistic periods. The committee assesses the level of the candidate both musically (convincing expression, feeling for harmony and form, polyphonic and tonal hearing) and technically. The result of the piano examination constitutes 10% of the overall assessment. Repertoire should include at least:
    • one piece from the Baroque or Renaissance period
    • one composition or sonata movement from the Classical period (sonata form is preferred)
    • one piece from the Romantic or 20th century
    • one song of your choice
    • At least one of the songs must be performed by heart.
  6. Practical examination in choral conducting, including practical mastery of basic tact technique, basic techniques of musical expression and distinguishing the specifics of individual stylistic periods. Adepts will bring the scores of these prepared pieces in duplicate. Candidates may submit their own compositional or music theoretical works or a recording of their own performance. The result of the examination in choral conducting constitutes 40% of the overall assessment. Conducting at least four choral works. Recommended literature – headings:
    • a) Composition A. Dvořák, L. Janáček, B. Martinů, P. Eben, A. Tučapský or Z. Lukáš;
    • b) polyphonic composition from the Renaissance or Baroque period;
    • c) one of the sacred compositions by A. Bruckner, S. Rachmaninov or P. I. Tchaikovsky
    • d) folk song arranged by O. Halma, Z. Lukáš, I. Hrušovský or other authors.
  7. The rehearsal includes the playing of choral scores that the candidate has prepared for conducting. The result of the examination constitutes 10% of the overall assessment.
  8. Demonstration of vocal disposition by a prepared interpretation of a folk or art song, or an aria (accompaniment to be provided by the applicant, or a cappella singing). The result of the examination constitutes 5% of the overall assessment.
  9. The entrance exam includes a general knowledge test, which makes up 10% of the overall assessment.
