Music Production

The entrance examination must demonstrate in particular:

  • theoretical knowledge (history of music, history of culture and art, music theory)
  • deep insight and orientation in the field of music production in the Czech Republic and abroad
  • the ability to reflect on the field in terms of current trends and knowledge
  • deep insight and orientation in the field of music culture and musical life in the Czech Republic and abroad
  • the ability to come up with creative production plans and the ability to both defend them
  • Relevant professional track record in music arts and management (portfolio)
  • active knowledge of at least one foreign language at B2 level
  • the bearing of the topic of the dissertation under consideration

The candidate shall submit a written concept of the intended dissertation in the range of 3 to 4 standard pages with a citation apparatus of 20 to 40 citations. The written concept of the dissertation must include: a precise definition of the topic of the thesis and a concrete specification of the research subject, research objectives, research questions (possibly also hypotheses), a detailed assumption of the structure of the thesis (content), a presentation of the intended research methodology, a summary of the current state of knowledge of the topic and a detailed review of the literature on the topic.

The candidate shall also submit a proposal of the supervisor with whom the dissertation concept will be discussed in advance, documenting his/her approval in writing. The admissions committee assesses the proposed dissertation concept with regard to the professional profile of the proposed supervisor, i.e. the potential for successful implementation of the dissertation project.

The candidate will submit a proposal for at least one production project within the framework of the implementation of the DSP at HF JAMU, especially with regard to the possible use of external grant schemes and international or inter-institutional cooperation. The criterion monitored in this respect is the qualitative and financial contribution to the development of the institution and the potential of the applicant to implement the proposal. The proposal shall be submitted by the applicant after prior discussion and in coordination with the proposed supervisor. The applicant may have a consultant for the implementation of the production plan.

The doctoral position involves independent research within the framework of a specific research project, cooperation on projects of the department or its students, participation in the management of final qualifying theses in the field and teaching within the specialization. The study is based on a flexible credit system. The student creates an individual study plan and can accentuate the relevant study obligations at different stages of the study. The study includes the completion of two music production projects and a foreign internship of at least one month. The duration of the studies is set at four years.
