Opera directing

Full secondary education, ending with a matriculation exam. Candidates must demonstrate an exceptional level in their specialisation in the practical examination. The practical examination determines professional and, above all, artistic aptitude for the study of the chosen specialisation of the study programme.

Together with the application form send:

1) Curriculum Vitae detailing previous artistic activities related to opera, theatre, music or visual arts;
2) Motivation letter;

Practical part:

3) A written directorial concept for W. A. Mozart’s Don Giovanni, including set and costume designs.
4) A detailed script for Act 1 of Don Giovanni (director’s book in piano lift).
5) A written directorial concept for an opera of your choice, including set and costume designs.
6) Stage rehearsal of the commissioned opera with models – the specific commission will be communicated to the candidate at least one month before the actual talent rehearsal and the candidate will bring a prepared script (sheet music with director’s notes) to the rehearsal to conduct the rehearsal according to.

7) Small tasks, e.g. working with text or space, set on the spot.

Theoretical part:

8) Opera in its historical development from the beginning to the present and its specific features (basic overview).

Result:

  • the practical part makes up 60% of the total assessment,
  • the theoretical part makes up 30% of the overall assessment,
  • The general knowledge test makes up 10% and is an integral part of the exam.

according to points 3-5 shall be delivered by the applicant in person, by post or by e-mail to the Study Department of the Faculty of Music of the JAMU or directly to the teacher as agreed, but always no later than 14 days before the talent test.
